The South Hill Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to the South Hill Model Railroad Museum, the Virginia S. Evans Doll Museum and Wildlife Exhibit located downtown in the restored South Hill Depot, the birthplace of South Hill at 201 S. Mecklenburg Avenue in South Hill, Virginia.

                         

The HO model trains represent over 200 miles of fun tracks in Virginia known as the Wiggle, Bump and Agony. You will also see the Atlantic & Danville Model R.R., which is the focal point of the museum. The A&D is a scale model of the trains and towns, circa 1950, as it ran through South Hill encompassing the route from Lawrenceville to Clarksville, VA.

Also featured are: Old Toy Trains, historical documents, photographs and artifacts from South Hill's past. You can even view an authentic Caboose located on the Depot grounds. Little boys of all ages love the trains and will enjoy a visit to our museum.

                    

If you like dolls, you'll love the Virginia S. Evans Doll Museum located in the Depot. Over 500 dolls are on display with some dating back to the 1800's. You will surely see one that reminds you of your childhood. You will also see doll furniture to dollhouses and carriages.

As you journey throughout the train museum be sure to see the various wildlife on display. From bald eagles to bobcats you can see the Southside Virginia woods come alive.

 

The Depot exhibits are open daily from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm; Admission is free; we operate all South Hill museums on two things, your good comments and your donations. Please feel free to leave one with us and take the good comments everywhere you go.

 

Just a block up West Main Street is the Tobacco Farm Life Museum of Virginia located at 306 West Main Street in South Hill. A visit here will let you discover our family farm heritage on the tobacco farms in Southside Virginia circa 1935 – 1950. Visit the farm home from kitchen to the bedroom, enjoy a trip to general store and visit the country church and one room schoolhouse too. You can even see an authentic hand cut log barn and strip room with farm implements under the shed and in the barnyard.

Let the kids have fun while you take a break too in South Hill's Centennial Park just around the corner from the Depot. Grab a bag of food from one of our fine restaurants and enjoy a picnic, playground fun or just a relaxing walk in the trees. You can launch your boat in either Lake Gaston or Buggs Island Lake in just 20 minutes from South Hill. South Hill is located halfway between Richmond, VA and Raleigh, NC, halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Blue Ridge Mountains and about two hours from Appomattox Court House or Historic Williamsburg, Jamestown and York Town, your are close to everything and not far away.
